Pacific View Asset Management, LLC History

Pacific View is a Delaware limited liability company, registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as an investment adviser. The Firm launched in July 2012. Pacific View is an entrepreneurial investment advisory firm with experienced investment professionals offering niche products typically within inefficient market segments. We currently have three portfolio management teams, two of which are focused on traditional long-only public equity investments and one dedicated to late stage venture capital opportunities. Our portfolio managers are seasoned, professional investors with strong performance records. U.S. Growth Equity Strategies. Mike Ashton, Portfolio Manager of our U.S. Growth Equities Strategies, has developed an investment approach that is unique and less accident prone than traditional high-growth investment strategies. The goal is to take the basic tenets of growth stock investing – the use of fundamental research to analyze companies with outstanding growth prospects – and improve outcomes by reducing unwanted volatility. We have been able to accomplish this by utilizing factor analysis as an integral part of the investment process. By combining traditional research with factor analysis, we are able to invest in companies during their most favorable risk/reward periods, while also effectively managing tracking error in order to keep it within our intended ranges (depending on strategy). This is a systematic approach that is very proactive. PVAM Perlus Microcap Equity Strategy. Managed by James Boucherat and David LaSalle, the objective of our investment discipline is long-term, absolute capital appreciation. James and David have worked together researching and investing in microcap companies since 2005. They officially launched the Perlus strategy in August of 2008 and joined Pacific View in 2014. As a team, they invest in quality businesses with strong balance sheets and net cash on hand. From an operational perspective, holdings for this strategy tend to be self-funding, generating positive free cash flow. James and David look to acquire shares of companies when they are relatively unknown and selling at very low multiples of cash flow (generally less than 4.5x 1 year out EV/EBITDA) but are growing operating income at approximately 20% annually or better. Moreover, they look to incorporate investment themes within their research, which leads to investments in businesses that benefit from a sustained undercurrent of capital spending such as fiscal expenditure initiatives, changes in government regulation, or highly disruptive technological advances. With James located in London, England, this strategy is managed by our UK affiliate, Pacific View (UK). The Global Innovations team joined Pacific View in March 2017 and is manage by Brian Gahsman. The strategy seeks to identify companies with innovative technological solutions for any aspect of business process automation. This is achieved by conducting proprietary, fundamental analysis on businesses with unique products and/or services that should benefit from the automation trend over the long term. We invest in companies that we believe are best positioned to benefit disproportionately from robotic or other innovative technological solutions. Generally speaking, the companies with which we invest, will have market capitalizations in excess of $50 million, short interest (as a percentage of float) of less than 40%, level or increasing 90-day average value, and a high ratio of research and development spending to sales. The Venture Capital team joined Pacific View in January 2017 and is managed by Joan Schriger and Brian O'Keefe. The strategy seeks to capitalize on two anomalies within the venture capital asset class: 1) over the last 30 years, the best venture investment returns have been concentrated within the top 50 venture capital firms, and 2) investments in companies that are further along in their development (post-product, post-revenue) tend to produce more stable risk-adjusted returns.
