Ariel Investments History

Ariel Investments is a money management firm headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Since our founding by John W. Rogers, Jr. in 1983, we have grown from 2 to 85 employees with over $6.3 billion in assets under management. Taking a long-term view and applying independent thinking to our investment decisions, we now span the market cap spectrum from micro to large and cover the globe with our international and global offerings. In addition to managing separate accounts for corporate, public, union, and non-profit organizations, we also serve as the investment adviser for Ariel Investment Trust – comprised of six no-load, publicly-traded mutual funds, which are available to institutional and individual investors, financial intermediaries and the defined contribution marketplace. Under Ariel’s time-tested patient investing philosophy, we have managed small cap value portfolios since the firm’s inception and our flagship Ariel Fund, representing our small/mid cap value strategy, dates back to 1986. Our mid cap value style, which includes Ariel Appreciation Fund, was introduced in 1989, while our focused value strategy, including Ariel Focus Fund, was launched in 2005. In 2009, we added a deep value approach with the addition of a micro-cap value product, which has an excellent track record starting in 2002 and we expanded our deep value line-up in 2011 with a small cap equivalent, Ariel Discovery Fund. More recently, Ariel launched international and global equity separate accounts and mutual funds, also with a long-term approach, at the end of 2011. The team managing these portfolios is based in Ariel’s New York office.
