AFL-CIO Housing Invst Trust History

The AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust (HIT) is an open-end investment company registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, commonly called a mutual fund. The HIT operates under the rules and regulations administered by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The HIT is a commingled fund and does not manage separate accounts. The HIT and its predecessor have more nearly 50 years of experience managing fixed-income assets for eligible U.S. tax-exempt institutional investors, which include Taft-Hartley and public employee pension plans with union member beneficiaries. The HIT is organized as a common law trust created under the laws of the District of Columbia pursuant to a Declaration of Trust originally executed September 19, 1981, and most recently amended on March 31, 2015. The HIT succeeded the AFL-CIO Mortgage Investment Trust, founded in 1964, and has managed assets for U.S. tax-exempt institutional investors since its inception date of September 1984. The HIT strives to be one of the premier socially responsible investment companies in the U.S. Its investment objective is to generate competitive risk-adjusted total rates of return for its investors by investing in fixed-income investments, primarily in government agency issued and insured multifamily and single family MBS. The HIT has outperformed its benchmark, the Barclays Capital Aggregate Bond Index, on a gross basis for 22 consecutive calendar years on a gross basis. Approximately 95% of the HIT portfolio is AAA-rated or carries a U.S. government or GSE guarantee. Other important objectives of the HIT are to encourage the construction of affordable and workforce housing and to facilitate employment for union members in the construction trades and related industries. The HIT has a special investment focus on mortgage backed securities that finance new construction or rehabilitation of multifamily housing projects and healthcare facilities. All on-site construction work financed through HIT investments is required to be performed by 100% union labor. The HIT has been a national leader in the prudent investment of pension fund assets promoting the creation of housing and supporting community development. It has financed over 98,600 housing and healthcare units through investments of more than $7.0 billion and created an estimated 71,000 construction jobs.
