Arrowstreet Capital, L.P. History

Arrowstreet was founded in July 1999. The firm's three founding partners are Bruce Clarke, Peter Rathjens and John Campbell. Bruce and Peter are President and CIO, respectively. John splits his time between his role as Co-Director of Research and his chair at Harvard University as the Otto Eckstein Professor of Applied Economics. Before starting Arrowstreet, this group had worked together for over 8 years at PanAgora Asset Management. Prior to leaving the firm, Bruce and Peter were President and CIO, respectively, at PanAgora, while John consulted to PanAgora as Director of Research (External). In addition, 5 other Arrowstreet professionals also worked together at PanAgora ranging from a period of 2-6 years. The firm is structured as a limited partnership that is majority owned and controlled by its senior professionals. Arrowstreet's 10 principals own 63% of the firm while minority stakes are held by the California Public Employees' Retirement System (18.5%) and the investment banking firm Putnam, Lovell, de Guardiola & Thornton (18.5%). This structure is one of Arrowstreet's primary competitive strengths. By keeping majority ownership and control in the hands of management, Arrowstreet is able to attract and retain a stable and talented group of investment professionals, each of whom is committed to the long-term success of the firm.
