Boston Private Value Investors History

Boston Private Value Investors (BPVI) was founded in 1983 under the name “E.R. Taylor Investments, Inc.” (ERTI) by Edmund R. Taylor, to manage large cap value equity for both taxable and non-taxable accounts. In December 1992 the business was purchased by the current CEO, Sherwood (“Woody”) T. Small and a group of investors. In January 2001 the firm was acquired by Boston Private Wealth Management, changing its name to Boston Private Value Investors.

Mr.  Sherwood Small

Sherwood T. Small, President & Chief Investment Officer, joined the firm in 1992. Woody is primarily responsible for Portfolio Management in addition to research analysis. His experience includes five years as a senior mergers and acquisitions professional with Bear Stearns and Salomon Brothers where he specialized in analyzing undervalued companies. Prior to his work in M&A, he worked as a security analyst for six years at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and at Lehman Brothers. Woody received a BA in Economics from Clark University in 1966 and an MBA from Cornell University. He is a former trustee of Clark University, and a member of the Advisory Board of New Hampshire Public Radio. He is also a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts, the Boston Security Analysts Society and the Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR).

James G. Tatakis joined Taylor Investments in March of 1998 as a Research Analyst. Before joining the firm, Jim analyzed equity securities as an intern for the Director of Equity Research at Franklin Research & Development in Boston. Prior to entering the investment field, he worked for six years as an auditor at the Office of Inspector General-HUD in Boston. Jim is a CPA in the State of Massachusetts and is also an affiliate member of the Boston Security Analyst Society. He earned a BS, cum laude, from Babson College in 1988 and an MS in Finance from Bentley College in 1997.

TIMOTHY S. LESKO, vice president, joined the firm in 1998. Tim is a senior portfolio manager responsible for institutional and high net worth clients. Previously he worked at Merrill Lynch and NationsBanc Montgomery Securities in New York City. Before entering the securities industry he was a sales manager with the S.D. Warren Company in Detroit, Michigan. He received a BA in Economics from St. Lawrence University. Tim is a member of the New Hampshire Estate Planning Council.

RACHEL M. SAVOIE, CFA, research analyst and portfolio manager, joined the firm in 2003 after receiving her MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Prior to joining the firm, Rachel was an equity intern at Fidelity Investments where she researched disk drives and tape storage stocks, and worked for nearly four years at Wellington Management Company, LLP as a Global High Yield Analyst. Before that she was at Putnam where she did portfolio compliance analysis. She holds a BA in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and is also a member of the CFA Institute.

J. STEPHEN CASTELLANO, research analyst, joined the firm in 2005 with nine years experience in market and equity research including coverage of the telecom services and steel industries. Prior to BPVI Steve was a vice president at Credit Lyonnais Securities where he covered telecom services. He has also worked as an associate analyst at Warburg Dillon Read and PaineWebber. He holds a BA from Oberlin College and a MBA from the F.W. Olin School of Business at Babson College.

RYAN M. COMSTOCK, trader, joined the firm in 2004 providing operations, trading and research support. Ryan was instrumental in transitioning BPVI from a manual to an electronic trade order management system in 2005. His role is to lead our trading effort, enhance the firm’s execution quality and monitor the markets as they pertain to our portfolios. He is a summa cum laude graduate of Merrimack College with a BS in Finance. Ryan is currently studying for the CFA program, level 1.
